Mayville Takes First Game Against Eagles

During the weekend of Nov. 11 and 12, the Eagles boarded their bus and headed northward to take on Mayville State University in North Dakota.  Some of the Eagles had never been this far north and so adventure awaited the student athletes.

A great time was had by all as the team stayed overnight at Assistant Coach Caleb Ruter's family farm outside Minneapolis.  There they saw where the all-time leading scorer in Emmaus history honed his skills in the "Barn Gym" there on the grounds.  With a homecooked brunch in their bellies, the Eagles got in the bus to play their waiting opponents, the Comets of Mayville St.

One of the neat things about this trip was finding out that the coach of Mayville State is a brother in Christ.  Coach Dewitt not only loves the Lord but he had his team ready to play that Friday night.  The Eagles struggled with their shooting and fell behind not far into the game and never could get on track.  The Comets played good defense and held the Eagles to just 22% from the field in the first half while shooting 41% themselves.

Sometimes things just don't go your way and this happened to be that game for the Eagles.  Down 18 points at the break, 34-16, the Eagles just couldn't find their range in the game.  One bright spot for the Eagles was the play of Nathan Davidson, who started in place of an injured Nathaniel Glidewell.  The big man for the Eagles had to stay out of foul trouble and battle on the boards if the Eagles were to have a fighting chance and Davidson was up to the challenge.  Davidson played a whopping 34 minutes inside and collected 8 rebounds while only gaining 3 fouls.  Caleb Postma led the Eagles scoring by getting 9 points in their 73-40 loss.

As the Eagles went to sleep that night on the Mayville St. Univ. campus, they knew that tomorrow was a brand new day.  It was going to be a better day.
