Breakout Season Lands Gelinas On All-American Team
There was no sophomore slump for Kia Gelinas in 2019-20, as the second-year guard followed an outstanding freshmen season with a record-setting sophomore campaign that earned her a spot on the NCCAA All-American 3rd Team.
Gelinas started all 28 games for the Lady Eagles this season, leading the team in scoring and propelling the team to MCCC Regular Season and Tournament Championships, while earning the program's second trip to the NCCAA Tournament in the last three years.
Along the way, Gelinas set the Lady Eagles' single-game scoring record, hitting for 40 points on January 18 in a home victory over Calvary University.
"I am happy for Kia to have received this All-American award and so proud of her!" exclaimed head coach, Heather Cunard. "She is a talented player with a knack for putting points on the board. She plays more like a 5'11" forward, getting to the basket on the cut and drive, and being under control going against bigger players."
Gelinas' offensive output was consistent all season, and she ranked in the NCCAA Top 10 in four categories:
5th (tied) - 21.1 pts/g
5th - .504 FG%
3rd - .414 3pt FG%
7th - .785 FT%
"Her versatility makes her tough to defend, as she can shoot the lights out from the 3-point line," highlighted Coach Cunard. "She has been an integral part of the team dynamic, both on the court and on the bus…she gets her teammates revved up to play with her stellar guitar skills! I'm thankful to have Kia on the team and excited for her to receive this honor."
The Denver, CO native finishes her second season 100 points shy of 1,000 career points.
Congratulations Kia, from the Emmaus Family!
