MINNEAPOLIS, MN - The Lady Eagles came home from Minnesota with a win and a loss after a day of hard play at North Central University.
The first match of the afternoon saw Emmaus pitted against NCAA DIII opponent Macalester College (St. Paul, MN). The Lady Scots, a very strong attacking team, got off to a slow error-ridden start hitting -.038 to the Lady Eagles .250. Emmaus was able to capitalize as they cruised to a first set victory (25-12).
"We knew that this set wouldn't be typical of the rest of the match as this was a high quality opponent and we believed they had more in the tank," commented Coach Pitman.
Indeed, Emmaus appeared to have "poked the bear", as Macalaster came out swinging for the rest of the match. The next three sets were a slug fest with lots of exciting play on both sides of the net, and each set was close (24-26, 23-25, 20-25). In the end, the Lady Scots generated more firepower as they put down 58 kills to the Lady Eagles 45 on the day. Emmaus hit at .199 to Macalester's .236.
"This was an exceptional effort against a strong opponent," said Coach Pitman. "I was extremely pleased with our play and effort. Macalaster was simply the better team today and I thought we did all we could to be competitive in this fast paced match."
After a short 30 minute break, the Lady Eagles took the court against NCCAA North Region opponent North Central University. The scores were close at times in each set, but Emmaus was able to generate strong offensive runs to sweep 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-15).
"Great response by the ladies after the loss in the first match," said Coach Pitman. "We are still striving for strong play regardless of the numbers on the scoreboard and we believe we accomplished that today."
Emmaus stands at 17-2 on the season, and will finish regular season play next week as they head to Milwaukee to take on Mount Mary University.
