DUBUQUE, IA - With a large crowd clad in black to cheer them on, the Lady Eagles captured a win in their first home match of the season, defeating the Lakers of Silver Lake College (NAIA - Manitowoc, WI) by a score of 3-1.

Having escaped with a narrow 3-2 victory in their last meeting with the Lakers, Emmaus knew the match would be hard fought.  Set one was indeed a tight affair, with the two teams going point for point to the end.  Silver Lake served for set point (23-24), but the Lady Eagles clawed their way back to a 27-25 victory.

Set two was a different story, as the Lady Eagles hit .250 with 12 kills and cruised to a 25-16 win.  Silver Lake responded in kind in the third set, pushing the Emmaus attack into the negatives and taking the set 17-25.  With the momentum in hand, it looked to be a Laker victory as set four found the Lady Eagles down by a score of 4-12.  Tenacious defense and more consistent hitting allowed Emmaus to get back into the match, knotting the score at 14.  The teams traded points to tie again at 19, but the Lady Eagles went on a 6 point run to end the match (25-19).

"Credit to our team for never giving up in this match, and to our crowd as well for encouraging us all the way," commented Coach Pitman.  "We are still seeking consistency in our play, but we are purposing to improve each time we are on the floor, which is very encouraging."

The Lady Eagles now turn to conference play, and will be tested on the road this week against two tenacious MCCC teams.  Emmaus makes the long trek to Manhattan, Kansas on Friday to take on NCCAA #10 ranked Manhattan Christian College, followed by a match with Barclay College on Saturday.  Visit the  Emmaus Volleyball Website or the Emmaus Athletics Facebook page for match times, live stream info, and updates.
