Emmaus Wins First Match at National Tournament

JOPLIN, MO – The Lady Eagles had a slow start, but quickly found their groove to defeat Calvary University (Belton, MO) in their first pool play match at the ACCA National Tournament.Taking to the court for their first official game in 19 days, Emmaus found a tough matchup in the rejuvenated and tenacious Lady Warriors.  The Lady Eagles did not have the earned points in the set that they would have liked and generated too many unforced errors.  Emmaus barely eked out the victory with a 25-22 score.

Sets two and three found Emmaus settling into the ball that they have played all season, as they worked hard at passing, staying in system, and aiming for high percentages on attack.  The Lady Eagles were able to control most of the pacing, and emerged victorious with scores of 25-16 and 25-15.

"Calvary played a tough match and they worked very hard to pick on vulnerabilities on our side of the court," commented Coach Pitman.  "I thought we did a good job of responding and sticking to our game plan, and we made the adjustments that were needed.  This is a great start for us in this tough tournament.

"Alli Howard led the attack for Emmaus with 8 kills.  Hannah Snow and Savannah Petersen each chipped in 5.  Vivienne Yates had 4 aces and 12 digs.  Hannah Bell had 21 assists and teamed up with Elizabeth Brame for 5 assisted blocks.  Jenny Benson had 3 kills and Rachel West had 7 digs.

Emmaus continues pool play tomorrow against #2 seed Arlington Baptist.  Semi-final match ups will be determined at the close of pool play tomorrow afternoon.
